What are Adverse Childhood Experiences?
ACEs are 10 common childhood traumas divided into three categories: abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. These traumas can affect the brains and bodies of growing children and impact health as adults.
Strengthening families and reducing childhood adversity by promoting protective factors, leveraging service systems, and engaging the community.
A connected community of thriving families

Shasta County has a higher rate of residents with long-term health issues than California as a whole. A survey was done in Shasta County to learn which ACEs are most common in our local population. In 2012, 281 residents between the ages of 18 and 64 were surveyed and answered the ACEs questions. In multiple ACE categories, Shasta County’s rates are double or almost double the state average.
A 2021-2023 survey showed that Shasta County adults are significantly more likely to have experienced four or more ACEs when compared to California adults.
The 2021-2023 California Health Interview Survey also showed that Shasta County adults are less likely to have reported no ACEs when compared to California adults.
Shasta County teens who responded to the California Health Interview Survey were more likely to report having ACEs occur to them than teens who responded across California.
